What is a deckle edge?

We are so excited about our latest addition to the TOG.ink product offering — specialty stocks featuring deckle edges! What is a deckle edge? A deckle edge refers to a type of paper edge that appears slightly irregular and feathery. This effect is reminiscent of the way paper looked when it was handmade, with natural, uncut edges. Today, the deckle edge is often replicated through special techniques to give paper a vintage, artisanal appearance.

A Brief History of the Deckle Edge

The history of the deckle edge dates back to the early days of papermaking. A deckle was a removable frame used in the traditional papermaking process. When the frame was removed, the wet paper pulp would spread slightly, creating a rough edge. This natural deckle edge became a hallmark of quality handmade paper.

Smooth, clean edges became the norm as papermaking evolved into an industrial process. However, the charm and appeal of the deckle edge endured. Today, it is often created intentionally to add a sense of history and craftsmanship to stationery products.

  3. Art Prints and Handmade Cards: Artists and crafters often use deckle-edged paper to give their creations an extra layer of authenticity and charm.

An Alternative that Will Give you an Edge

We recently released a new deckle trim option for flat cards, and customers are loving it! The trim option is a jagged cut around all four edges of the card. Although it’s not feathered like a true deckle, it still adds a unique shape and interest to the card. There are a couple benefits to the Deckle Trim Option:

  1. An Affordable Alternative: The deckle trim option is an affordable alternative to traditional deckle edge papers.
  2. A Beautiful Layer: Flat cards featuring the deckle trim layer beautifully with a slightly larger square corner base card.
  3. More Possibilities: More specialty print processes and card sizes are available with the deckle trim option.

Deckle edge stationery is a way to stand out in a world of mass-produced, uniform paper products. The irregular edges convey a sense of care, tradition, and individuality, making every piece feel special. Explore your options here at TOG.ink and starting memorable pieces for every occasion.
